What are the signs of a "going bad" auto transmission?

it will slip, the engine will rev up slightly before shifting, it will hesitate, you may lose a gear entirely. going from reverse to drive it will make a horrendous clanking sound. Sometimes just doing a oil change will clear some problems up..
